Sophie Savoie "TO HAVE BEEN OR NOT TO HAVE BEEN"
Video installation inside wooden trunk 70x50x50cm, 2016

With this installation the artist Sophie Savoie wants to immerse us in a mysterious and dreamlike atmosphere and she wants to question us about our interior way to awareness, about the life we choose to live, about the traces we'll leave after our dissolution. A chest without bottom to give the dimensions of an limitless interior world.
The projected subjects of the pictures are children that show innocence, curiosity, the future. Their zoomorphism creates a double tension: the animals masks veil and unveil. The mask protects and unfolds who wears it but it has also a "magic" characteristic, it transforms people, turns them in what they are not really, in what they don't know, to make them know themselves better: being an animal, they don't have fear of it anymore, but go along with it…
The noir atmosphere of the pictures enphatizes this tension.
In a chest like in a shakesperian night anything could happen....Imaginary animals with humanoid appearance, talking animals, magical trasformations... like a dream that not only raises wonder but also brings us back in the past, in our childhood world to live again our memories both real than supposed.
Bottom (A midsummer night’s dream): ”I have had a dream past the wit of man to say what dream it was…. but man is but a patched fool if he will offer to say what methought I had. The eye of man hath not heard, the ear of man hath not seen, man’s hand is not able to taste, his tongue to conceive, nor his heart to report what my dream was.”
